Firstly I ask everybody a question: Do you always use disposable wooden chopsticks and styrofoam food containers at lunch? I guess most of you will say “yes”. And you will add some advantages, such as using them is so convenient. I also used these disposable wooden chopsticks and styrofoam food containers. But I have begun to use stainless steel container and chopsticks instead after an impressive experience.
I know a student in my father’s college. He always used the chopsticks and the food container of his own. One day, I couldn’t help asking why never use disposable wooden chopsticks and styrofoam food containers. “You know, these wooden chopsticks and styrofoam are free in the canteen, and they are so convenient and time-saving, why don’t you use them?” He answered: “Of course I know this, but do you know if every body use two chopsticks a day, the whole college students would consume 5,000 pairs of chopsticks just equal to a huge tree. Can you imagine how many trees will be cut down for this in the whole country? The styrofoam containers are even worse. It will take 200 years to degrade one container! Any ways including burning and burying to erase them will result in the pollution of the air and the soil!” I was shocked by his words. From then on, I also take the stainless steel chopsticks and food container and persuade my classmates when I saw them using the disposable wooden chopsticks and Styrofoam food containers. After they heard my experience, they all made up their mind to never use these disposable things again.
Perhaps someone would say, “Chopsticks is so small that it has little thing to do with our nature.” However, I do pay more attention to small things in which we can clearly see the attitude of a person to environmental protection. With Beijing’s bid for the 2008 Olympic, the citizens intend to focus on the pollution of Beijing. As for middle school students, we put ourselves into diverse activities in order to support the environmental protection of our city. The first group of us make battery-like containers and put them at the gate of school for battery recycle, while the second group manage the wastes into different kinds so that the factory could degrade them more efficiently. A detailed report about consuming thing is what the other group has done – they make a nine-meter banner with “Protect our home, embrace the nature” printed on it, and take it to the Beijing zoo!
Exploring environmental issues and examining the solid waste problem, one understanding become more and more clear in our mind. No one can clear of environmental degradation! Environmental protection is not only a slogan, a talk show topic, it is more of a systematic science, more of an awareness, a concept, an action, and a life style. It needs common effort of the government, the experts and the community.
What should be the environmental figure of Beijing in 21st century? “Green Beijing” is a beautiful hope for our new Beijing. It shows an attractive picture of a blue sky, cleaner river and fresh air. You may see the true color of the sunshine in the daytime, and appreciate the stars twinkling in the night. Green is a symbol of life. Green is the color of the nature. Green is the essence of the earth; we summon the green, save the green and embrace the green. Let’s join hands and create a greener Beijing in 2008!
